Originally written for violin and cello, Three Pieces for Violin and Cello by Kohei Kondo was arranged for violin and marimba – with the marimbist playing the cello part - by Tandem Duo in the fall of 2011. The arrangement uses extended techniques on marimba, such as bowing, playing with fingers, and dead strokes, to mimic the various cello articulations. The three movements, "The Moon", based on a poem by Kazuko Morinaga, "Invited Land," based on a poem by Kunitomo Emori, and "Native Land," based on a poem by Kunitomo Emori, use minimal notes with an exceptional sense of sonority and counterpoint between the two players to paint hauntingly beautiful images of rural Japan.
